Dialup Not Responding - A Quick Fix

When dialup refuses to receive any data, even though your browser or other program is trying to send data, it can be frustrating, especially with a deadline. The following short series of steps can keep your dialup receiving data without a delay.

1. If you don't have a browser that can refresh the page, get one. Opera works well for me, and it's faster than Internet Explorer in the first place.

2. Load a page such as Wikipedia.org (Not the homepage). It is large enough so that it doesn't completely reload from the cache when it refreshes, but small enough that your dialup doesn't just "give up" on the page.

3. Set the page to reload every second. In Opera, right click anywhere in the window and select "Reload Every". Select "Custom", then enter 1 second in the dialogue box that follows. Make sure to click "Enable", then click OK.

I suggest locking the Wikipedia tab so you don't accidentally close it and allow the connection to stop transferring data. Also note that this will use bandwidth, so expect a tiny drop in your speed on other pages. Finally, 1 second might be more frequently than you need, so adjust the time accordingly.

This does not seem to work for connections that disconnect, but is for connections that seem to go dormant. Sometimes this will not work, and your only other option is to disconnect and reconnect. If your connection seems dormant on your third connection, disconnect and try dialing your ISP from a phone and listen for any abnormalities.

So, now you've got your broadband package and you are raring to go! But first, make sure you are secure and safe to do so without being prayed upon by the evils of the online world.
If you bought a "package" with a broadband company there is most likely a CD-ROM in the box your other pieces arrived in. You should check it to see if it includes a "firewall".

Broadband - Voluntary Code Launched

With Ofcom revealing that over half of all households in Britain have Broadband, compared to just 39 per cent a couple of years ago and then a seven-fold increase over the last five years, it is no wonder that there is now a more widely spread concern that people are not getting the broadband speed that they have been promised.

This is one of the reasons why communications regulator, Ofcom, have decided to take action.

This code is being put in practice in an attempt to make all broadband speeds clear to customers. There are a total of 32 providers who have agreed to reveal their accurate broadband speeds to enable customers to spot which offers who be best for them.

Ofcom have said that this idea has been put in place to make sure that people are clear between the speeds that they think they will be getting and the speeds that they will actually get.

With this new code in place there will be 90 percent of UK broadband customers catered for. This code will also mean that service providers will have to resolve any technical issues that people may experience and also allow their customers to change to a cheaper deal if the one they were on was not completely accurate.

O2 have said that they completely approve this code and have commented that it could help reduce any frustration that their broadband customers may feel if they do not have the full information.
