Science's Little Helper - Satellite Internet

Sometimes it seems like no stone has been left unturned on the Earth's surface and that all civilizations have been discovered. While it may feel like this sometimes and though a lot of the world has been discovered and explored, there are still plenty of mysteries remaining out there to keep scientists, anthropologists, and all other explorers pretty busy for a long time. The internet has always been a wonderful place to exchange information and learn about a wide range of things and for a long time it was something that could only be used when you were near some place that provided it. The existence of satellite internet means that now people can access the internet from all over the world in places where no trace of modern civilization exists.

Internet access from remote locations is a wonderfully useful asset to academics who travel the world studying everything from tribal behavior to rare Amazonian plants. Instead of being forced to record all of their information in the field and wait to return before sharing, people can put their findings on the internet and correspond with others in their field. The amount of time satellite internet saves in terms of people having to go back and forth to gather and compare information is amazing. Internet access gives people the ability to be in the field and continue to work with others who are halfway across the world sitting at a desk with volumes of information at their fingertips.

For those who are constantly on the move in remote areas there is equipment that is well suited for their needs. Portable satellite modems come in the shape of a flat rectangular box that you need to point in the general direction of the satellite. The modem has an internal signal strength meter to indicate to guide the user in aligning it with the satellite, though it does not have to be exact. These modems allow you to use satellite internet and usually have their own batteries so you can connect other devices such as laptops without draining its battery. Satellite phones are another way to access the internet from a secluded place.

Satellite phones were one of the first ways to connect to the internet using satellites. They can be connected to laptops and other computers by using a USB plug. Most satellite phones possess omni-directional antennae the user does not have to worry about satellite alignment. Though usually relatively small and portable, satellite phones have a low bandwidth, meaning the connection is very slow so browsing is not ideal but it still functions well for uses such as e-mail. The technology that allows you to use satellite internet is becoming more portable and easy to use with time. It is not far fetched to think that someday a person will be able to access high speed internet from the depths of the Amazon rainforest. It is exciting to think of the scientific progress that will be made with the help accessibility of the internet all over the world.
